Vietnamese passports rose 10 places, behind Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia

Although increasing by 10 places compared to 2022, according to the rankings, Vietnamese passports are still behind the passports of some countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Henley Global Index has just released the new Quarterly Henley Passport Ranking Index 2023 for countries and territories around the world.

According to this result, Singapore citizens continue to own the “most powerful” passport in the world.

Only this country scored 192 points, which is equivalent to the citizens of “lion island nation” to visit 192 countries and territories without a visa. It is known that in the rankings of many different organizations, Singapore passports have maintained the top position for many years in a row.

Second place belongs to Germany, Italy and Spain. These three countries all get 190 points. The next place belongs to Austria, Finland, France, Japan, Luxembourg (a country located in Western Europe, bordering France, Germany, Belgium), Korea and Sweden. These countries all got 189 points, tied for 3rd place.

In Southeast Asia, Malaysian passports have the second highest ranking (after Singapore), reaching 180 points, ranking 11th. Brunei ranks 20th, reaching 166 points. Thailand scored 79 points, ranked 64th. Indonesia ranked 69th, reaching 73 points. Philippines ranked 74th with 66 points.

Meanwhile, Vietnam reached 55 points, ranked 82nd, the same rank as Cambodia. Compared to the end of 2022, ranked 92nd, currently the rank of Vietnamese passports has increased by 10 steps.

With this score, Vietnamese passport holders can visit 55 destinations and territories around the world without applying for a visa or just e-visa (electronic visa) or visa on arrival (airport entry visa).

However, if compared with countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is only “peak” when compared to Laos (ranked 87th) and Myanmar (ranked 89th).

With the goal of attracting international tourists to promote socio-economic development, recently, the National Assembly of Vietnam passed a law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on exit and entry of Vietnam citizens and the Law on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners. The law takes effect on August 15.

Accordingly, the visa duration is increased from 30 days to 90 days, valid for multiple entries. In addition, the National Assembly also agreed to increase the duration of temporary stay at the border gate for people entering the country under the visa exemption category from 15 days to 45 days.

It is known that some countries in the region such as Thailand, Singapore … are applying a visa-free policy with a temporary stay period of up to 45 days, 90 days.

In the opposite direction, the world’s “weakest” passport still belongs to Afghanistan. Citizens of this country are allowed to visit 27 countries and territories without a visa. Next are the passports of Iraq and Syria ranked 102 and 101 with 29 and 30 points respectively.

Henley Passport Index is a prestigious and annual ranking of Henley & Partners company.

It is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) provided since 2006 by analyzing the total number of countries a country’s citizens can enter visa-free, or on a visa basis. arrival.

Statistics are made on 227 destinations globally, updated every quarter. For each visa-exempt destination, the passport of that country will be added one point.
