Over the past 12 months, the capital Hanoi (Vietnam) has increased by 20 places among the “World’s Most Living Cities” rankings.

According to the ranking of the most livable cities in the world in 2023 published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Austrian capital Vienna continues to be honored at the highest position.

Experts say that Vienna’s success is due to the convergence of many factors, from a good entertainment culture, to reliable infrastructure, standard educational and medical services.

“For many years, the top position has always been for Vienna. Only the years of the Covid-19 pandemic have caused the city to fall from the top position”, a part of the report.

Denmark’s Copenhagen followed in second, while Australian cities Sydney and Melbourne made the top three and four.

EIU has ranked 173 cities in the world with selection criteria based on quality of health care, crime rate, political stability, infrastructure and green environment.

In the top 10, Canada has three cities on the list, including Vancouver 5th, Calgary 7th and Toronto 9th.

Also in the top 10, Asia has only one representative is the city of Osaka, Japan. In 10th place, Osaka has a slight increase in its cultural and environmental rankings.

In addition to the 10 most livable cities in the world, the EIU also released a list of cities with a strong increase in rankings in the past 12 months. Surprisingly, Hanoi is on this list. This is also the only city in Vietnam named in the EIU’s report. The city increased 20 places compared to 2022, ranked 129.

According to Upasana Dutt, head of the most livable cities division at the EIU, the lifting of Covid-19 prevention policies has contributed to “increasing liveability globally in 2023”.

“The quality of education increases as children return to school. Hospitals and health systems also ease the burden. This improvement can be seen in developing country cities in Asia and the Middle East,” Ms. Dutt said.
